What Is #mytherapy?

Today I am kicking off a new series called #mytherapy.  We all have different forms of what rejuvenates us, what we consider to be our therapy, your therapy, my therapy.  What supports your emotional, physical, and psychological well-being?

This is a space for me to share with you, and for you with me as well as all of our readers what your therapy is.  It’s kinda like self-care++.  It’s the stuff that sustains you, keeps you grounded, focused, brings clarity, and gives you the energy to get out there every day and give it your all, whatever that might be… not every day will be faced with the same energy and intensity, but whatever level it is, it will be that much better because of #mytherapy.

In this series, I’m sharing with you the different forms of therapy that I have in my life as well as a space for me to hear from you.

If you would like to submit a comment below, please do so, or if you would like to submit an entry for me to include in this series, please email me at meredith@upsidedownflan.com and answer the question….. What is your #mytherapy?

Why Is #mytherapy Important to Have In Your Life

Finding #My Therapy is an essential component to a healthy and fulfilling life.  The modern world can really beat us up, leaving you depleted and questioning the many whys in life.  #mytherapy is one way that you can counter the negative impact of these daily struggles.

Finding the thing(s) that may not always feel good at first and will bring up uncomfortable feelings at times, (just like psychotherapy) are also the things that will push you forward.  #My therapy connects you to your essence, your core, the centerpiece of your beliefs, and your mission in this world… Yes, you have a mission, we all do, we touch each other’s lives in different and unknowing ways… and you have the power to effect change for those around you.

The #MyTherapy in your life helps you connect to that part of yourself that gets buried in your daily hustle.  These are just some of the reasons why #MyTherapy is important to have in your life.

#mytherapy Doesn’t Always Feel Good

As I often talk about in therapy, it just doesn’t always feel good.  Sometimes we go to therapy thinking we need to feel better but it doesn’t quite work out that way.  Of course, unloading and a good vent session can feel good, and sometimes that is what we need, but once that vent session is over, you are left with the underlying issues that caused that problem, that’s where it can get kinda icky.

When we get into it and face the hard stuff, some might call it “your demons”, it can be scary and really really hard… that is what #MyTherapy is and can be, outside the “therapist’s office”.  It’s taking those challenges to the next level and facing them outside in the real world.  This is what I love about being outdoors and in nature… I won’t get into too much of that just yet, but stay tuned cause more around this idea is coming in subsequent entries.

Suffice it to say that if it is hard, then it is changing you and you are putting in the effort that will create change for yourself.  Of course, finding the right balance between “the hard” is also important.   Remember to listen to your inner gut, if something feels really uncomfortable then at the very least, pause and think about a different approach.

Moving Beyond Psychotherapy

If you have been following me and my blog, you know how important I think therapy is for one’s life, I liken it to annual visits to see your primary care… a yearly checkup to make sure everything is what it should be and tweak the things that are a little off.

However, that does not mean that psychotherapy needs to be something that you do for the rest of your life, especially around mood disorders like depression and anxiety.  If you battle a more serious mental health disorder such as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder maintaining your treatment which might include psychotherapy will be important, the decision to end a form of treatment should be considered with your healthcare professional.

But with that said, having the #mytherapy in place for you and your life will give you more room to have less of the traditional therapy and help you move beyond therapy.  When you have the right #mytherapy approach you will be able to find your own ways of managing the upsidedowns of life.

So, let’s get into it… entry #1 coming soon… when I will tell you … why running is my ultimate therapy!
