Mother’s Day Gifts That Heal When Battling Depression and Anxiety

Mother's day gifts that heal

Your Mom Makes the World a Better Place…

And this mother’s day you have the opportunity to make HER world a better place.  You want to find the perfect gift for your mom that shows appreciation, love and speaks to who she is, which can be hard.  So, I put together some ideas to help you think about how you can give your mom the gift of time and space for herself, where she can step away from the hectic pace of life and focus on herself.  Many of my articles target living with and healing from mental health issues, in particular, anxiety and depression.  In the same fashion, this article will focus on Mother’s Day gifts that heal, recoup and rejuvenate.

Being a Mom is Caretaking at its Very Best

In the world of mental health, we talk a lot about “care”.  Care is that act or action to protect another person or being from harm, supporting positive growth, emotionally, physically, and intellectually.  That sounds like a pretty good definition of what a mom does to me.  And so it is very fitting that for this one time in the year (hopefully there are more) we step back and turn the table, doing that for mom which she does tirelessly day in and day out for all of us.

#2 Mother’s Day Gifts that Heal by Getting Your Mom Closer to Nature

If you’ve read any of my other articles, you know that I am a proponent of the healing properties in the outdoors.   The value of getting outside and being active is one of the best natural remedies for mental fatigue, depression, and anxiety.   Maybe your mom is already an avid gardener and regularly outdoors, if so great, keep on encouraging that.  But if depression, anxiety, or perhaps the COVID-induced languish have set in, then maybe she needs a nudge to remind her of the healing properties that await her outdoors.  Below are a few gift ideas to help entice, remind and encourage her to get outside or if not possible to get outside more often, plant a little herb garden inside that will still bring some of the satisfaction and healing that can be derived from planting, nurturing and watching something flourish, kinda like you as a kid 🙂

#3 The Gift of Therapy

As a therapist, naturally, I see great value in the healing that can be done through this type of personal work and development.  When battling depression or anxiety, it is sometimes hard to take those first steps and initiate the self-care needed, much easier it is to focus on supporting those around you.  Anyone reading this guilty of that?  🤫. It’s ok I won’t tell…

…. and if your mom falls into this category maybe setting her up with an easy-to-access online platform could be beneficial.  Below is a link from Online Therapy.com, with who I have teamed up to help connect people to a therapist virtually from anywhere in the world.  When you use my link below you will also get 20% off, might be worth a look and see if this is something that could work for your mom.  I also included a video that will help explain who Online-Therapy.com is and what you can expect.

#4 Indulgence

Perhaps you just want to indulge your mom this year and give her a few gifts that will satisfy her sweet tooth or set her up for a homemade brunch.  After all nourishment and indulgence always have their place in the world of healing and recuperation and your mom has certainly earned the right!    Below are a few links to some of my affiliates with links to their sites where you can find that gift for mom to spoil her a little this year.

#5 Rest and Relaxation

When many people think about self-care, spa days and massages often come to mind.  This is definitely another piece of what helps keep us healthy, by fortifying and rejuvenating, to support the many stresses and challenges encountered through our days.

Maybe the Mother’s Day gifts that heal for your mom include a Groupon to a local spa or salon where mom can walk out stylin’ a fresh haircut or creating a spa day at home that she is able to sneak in at the end of a long week.  Below are some other ideas that might work for your mom, they can be simple aromatherapy created while in the shower or a full-on massage and spa gift basket.

Another option might be this neck and shoulder wrap that eases tension, stress and really helpful for migraines with a gentle warming massage.  I got one of these for a family member who suffers from terrible migraines and they have loved it.  It also has a nice heating feature for those cooler days.

#6 For the Athletic Mom

Some other Mother’s day gifts that heal fall into the realm of physical activity.  An essential piece of self-care and staying healthy, that I speak a lot about on this blog.  Through physical activity, mom will have a chance to work up a sweat and get some of those endorphins running which is produced by the body through physical activity and creates that natural high, that many runners speak about after a run.

Yoga provides an incredible workout while also building on some of the principles of mindfulness and mediation.  Maybe your mom is already an avid yoga enthusiast or a newbie.  If this is something that you would like to do with your mom, that could also be a really nice way to give her the gift of time and self-care.  Below is a link to a yoga kit from Amazon that could be coupled with a trial run of yoga classes from a local gym.

#7 Getting Involved in the Community

One of the best ways to heal and work on ourselves is through community involvement and volunteering.  If this is something that appeals to your mom, maybe it would be worth checking out the different ways she and perhaps other members of the family could support a local organization or even a more well-known organization like Stand Up To Cancer.  The gift of time supporting a cause that she cares about might be a nice way to celebrate mom and her passions.  It’s important to remember that sometimes the greatest gifts are those of time and emotional connection.

#8 Help Mom Get Creative

Creativity is another approach to working through the challenges in life and can provide enrichment and healing.  Cooking, art, and music are a few mediums for creativity, but really when it comes to artistic expression, there is no limit, whatever it is that she is into, be it collecting beach glass and creating mosaics or developing her flair for fashion, it’s all fair game.  What are your mom’s forms of creative expression?   What could you gift her with that will allow her the opportunity to explore this part of herself?  Some possible ideas are:

  • Cooking classes from a local business or culinary school.  In the larger cities and towns, there are often gourmet shops that offer classes, like Sur La Table.
  • Is your mom crafty and someone who enjoys painting on rocks, mugs, or fabric?  These acrylic pens below might be a cool and unique gift that she could do some fun things with!

  • Or maybe she needs some art supplies replenished.  Of course, there are lots of places to make these kinds of purchases, Amazon, as we know, offers quick convenience, and so I have a few ideas from them below. The other thing you could do is build her own kit with some of the items below.  A family member did this for me this past year and I thought it was pretty awesome!

  • And since I mentioned the mosaic idea… here are a few tools from Amazon that your mom might need.

#9 The Gift of Mindfulness and Meditation

I mentioned the benefits of yoga earlier, and if that is not a great match for your mom, maybe a subscription to one of the mediation and mindfulness apps would be a good option.  I can’t emphasize enough, how mindfulness and meditation, even just for a few minutes a day, can make a world of difference.  A few of the more well-known options out there are Headspace and Calm.com.  Check them out and see if this is something that could work for your mom.

Mother's Day gifts that heal

#10. A Sound Night of Sleep

Another essential component to good health and mental well-being is getting adequate and sufficient sleep. When we sleep, the body rests and repairs itself, preparing you for the challenges to come and recovering from the challenges she has overcome. Being able to get good quality sleep cannot be overstated.

Maybe this is an area that you could focus on for your mom this Mother’s Day.

What is your mom’s sleep routine? Does she get enough sleep and is it good quality sleep? All good questions to ask and think about as you decide on a gift that will promote healthy sleeping habits.

Some ideas:

  • Sleep machines, white noise, or peaceful music can quiet the mind and help the body relax.
  • A contoured pillow can ease the stress on the neck and shoulders, promoting spinal health and less disrupted sleep.
  • Essential oils and soothing light can also promote a restorative restful night’s sleep.

#11 The Gift of You – Time

Maybe the best gift of all is the time you can spend with her.  We often get a little overly focused on the things to give to a person and granted if you can’t be with your mom physically then sometimes we feel the need to focus on ‘things’, but there is a happy medium in there somewhere.  Maybe it’s not a “one and done” type of gift, but something like a weekend together over the summer or joining her for a monthly yoga class.

Hopefully, some of the ideas above will get you thinking about some of the many Mother’s Day gifts that heal which you can offer to your mom as a way to express your love and gratitude for all that she is and does.

If this article was helpful please share it with friends and family.   And remember whatever gift it is that you find for your mom, it will be … just what she needs…. today… at this moment….
